Tribe of Noise: free and legal music downloads
With a streaming broadcast of performances around the globe, Tribe of Noise opened its digital gates to the public on the 14th of July. This new music platform offers fans and professionals free and authorized music downloads. With a special license the artists allow their music to be distributed freely. Free and for free... could life be that simple?
Tribe of Noise offers music fans the opportunity to connect with new or yet unknown talent. The music on the site can be downloaded for free for your iPhone or iPod. You are allowed to make a copy for your next-door neighbor, edit it into your film or remix. You can play it anywhere, and also use it commercially. As long as you attribute the original composer and share your derived work under the same license.
Co-founder Hessel van Oorschot: "The idea behind Tribe of Noise was born out of frustration; looking for some nice music to edit into a video we were confronted with all these rules that limit free use of music. Free music that you can use to enhance your own creative product is hardly available. Contrary to the computer world where everybody knowingly or not uses open source material or freeware. With that concept in the back of our minds we went looking for a solution.”
A composer traditionally transfers the rights to his work to a record company or a collecting agency. But an unknown talent has got a problem. The audience has to know you first before you can really earn some money with your music. Tribe of Noise gives artists the opportunity to display their music by using a special license (creative commons). Everybody can download this free music, share and distribute it, as long as the artist is attributed. So the platform is for artists looking for cooperation, for recognition, for an audience or for landing a contract. Or even for well-known artists who wish to break away from the traditional business models in the music industry.
“Every day we're pleasantly surprised by the enthusiasm and talent of our tribe members. I sometimes wonder about the criteria of the industry to invest in someone. And think a lot of people feel that way. They don't want to be dictated what music to listen to. They want to choose their own idols. We're heading towards a time where not just a few stars are made big, but where fans want to discover and nurture talent themselves. I like to think we contribute to that with our platform”, says Sandra Brandenburg, co-founder of Tribe of Noise.
Tribe of Noise aims at globally connecting musicians and music fans. Using new technology, new licensing models and a whole different world view, we are heading for a revolution in the music industry: music will become free and for free.
